COPPER CULTURE STATE PARK

Copper Culture State Park was established after discovery in 1952 of artifacts relating to the Old Copper Culture.  These artifacts date from about 4000 to 3000 BC.  Burial ground of North America’s earliest metal users, the Oconto Site is the oldest dated cemetery in eastern North America.  Admission is free.  A guided tour is available and may be scheduled by contacting OCHS at ochs@ocontoctyhistsoc.org.  A foot trail leads from the parking area to a stone monument at location of burial ground.  National Registry of Historic Places, 1962.

Driving north:  As you drive north on Highway 41 take the Highway 22 exit.  Turn left around the round-about, under the highway, then left around the second round-about.  There are signs to help.  Continue to the t-intersection and turn left.  Follow the road around to the park.

Driving south:  As you drive south on Highway 41 take the Highway 22 exit.  Go around the round-about to exit on the opposite side.  There are signs to help.  Continue to the t-intersection and turn left.  Follow the road around to the park.
